Qualifications All qualifications are currently given a level which allows you to compare different qualifications with each other. GCSEs are level 2 and the further education qualifications you are taking at Fort Pitt Grammar school - A-levels - are level 3.
Higher Education qualifications progress from level 4 to level 8. To be able to study at level 4, 5, or 6 you will need A-levels but you do not need to have completed a level 4 and 5 qualification to start one which is level 6.
A first degree is a level 6 qualification which usually involves a minimum of three years study for a Bachelors or M level degree, and usually requires three full A-levels for entry.
Foundation degrees and HNDs are level 4 and 5 qualifications which require two years of study, and can then often be topped up with an additional year to gain a first degree. These are mainly in vocational subjects and often only require 2 full A-levels or lower grades from 3 A-levels.
Once you have completed a level 6 qualification you can progress to higher degrees such as masters and doctorates.
